"It is obvious that someone who would apply for an award in orchestral programming probably has a serious interest in the subject, and is likely already very good at it. That is certainly the case here. Hardly a concert in the fifty or so submitted by these applicants does not display something truly interesting. There are premiers, of course, and revivals of unusual works by familiar names, and thought provoking juxtapositions. But perhaps most intriguing are the number of performances of known literature written since 1980. Is it possible that a real "repertoire of the modern" is slowly revealing itself? If so, that is very good news for the art."
